Gauthier's List (Third Edition) - A man, Leonard Gauthier, was a member of a secret CIA research project tasked with the development of a machine that can program the brain like a computer. The program was terminated. With the advent of advanced electronic and computer technology which became available years later, Gauthier privately resumed the development of the machine and produced a working portable unit that could be used to positively control people against their will. Corrupted by the power he then possessed, Gauthier turned in to a delusional psychopathic serial killer using the device, primarily targeting former enemies of his.
Alerted by another former member of the secret research team that became aware of Gauthier’s exploits, the CIA recruits Bruce Highland, who is a private investigator with a background in military intelligence with knowledge of the original program, to find and stop Gauthier.

I've read the author's first two books and, frankly, I think they were overrated. This one however, I believe actually rates a five star. He's hit on something, and he knows it (I say this as his pricing reflects it.) An observation I would make on the author in general is that he is a master at crafting scenes, meaning whole chapters and sideline stories in his books, but in the past he has struggled to put them in to a credible, single thread story line. He has really pulled it together on this one. I was fascinated by both the transaction process and technical dialogue, which appears to have been fairly thoroughly researched, and the relationship development (full disclosure, I am a romance novel reader) is not all that bad. He does action better than he does romance, but despite his seeming abhorrence to it in his introduction, he handles it reasonably well. Although the author "claims" that he's focused on one target demographic (action novel readers), this piece caters to a fairly wide range of interests. And I love the cover art, it ties in with the story subtle manner.Product details

The author has a well thought out story line and great character development. There are a few typos, but overall, the book has a good pace, is captivating and easy to read. I look forward to additional books by Alex Ryan, hopefully further adventures of the hero, Bruce Highland.
It is a Good story, but it would benefit from some editing, better chapter breaks, and less sentences that begin with so.
As a sucker for stories of intrigue involving Nazi scientists, nefarious CIA programs, and good old fashioned American heroes, Gauthier's List satisfies. The author has crafted a good story, made mind control machines believable, and made the morality of such a thing crystal clear. An extra layer or two of simple editing would boost this novel into a realm that any savvy literary agent should snatch right up.
