In the aftermath of a violent incident and near-death experience, Sarah Lange is plagued by heavenly voices and dogged by a desire to return “home.” Frightened by her desire to terminate her existence on earth, she checks into a trauma center in Malibu, California, and meets Dr. David Sutton, an intellectual, scientist, reductionist, and someone who believes in nothing beyond his immediate experience. David’s world is as divorced from mystery and magic as Sarah’s is alive with and animated by it. Their sessions open up a dialogue about the separation of worlds—one easily defined and explained and one unknowable and waiting on the other side of human experience. Even as his faith in his profession fades, David struggles to bring his disturbed patient back to the real world. In a desperate effort to define herself, Sarah “escapes,” and David must decide how far he is willing to go to save a patient, and ultimately, himself.

I loved the TV series Joan of Arcadia, so when I read that this novel by the Emmy nominated writer and producer was on sale for $1.99, I decided to take a chance. Was I ever glad. A most excellen writer and storyteller, Ms Hall gives us the tale of Sarah Lange, a young women suffering from PTSD, who has voluntarily signed herself into a psychiatric facility. She hears 'guides,' voices which tell to kill herself and come 'home.' We learn her story through her interactions with her psychiatrist and also his own story is gradually revealed.Altogether a most satisfying book.

Charisma A Novel edition by Barbara Hall Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Powerful plot- stays with you long after you finish the book.
Always looking for a good read, I ordered this book because I'm a big fan of Homeland's (don't know how I missed Joan of Arcadia) brilliant plot twists and wanted to see if this book could make the cut. I started Charisma today and didn't put it down until I finished. Great book ... buy it for yourself and pay it forward ... and I am not Barbara Hall's sister )
An unusual and well-crafted story. I reviewed it in more detail on Goodreads.
The conversation is witty but honest, as is the unfolding of Barbara Hall's characters in 'Charisma'. I loved it - read it all in one night.
Man, this was good! I only read at night before I go to sleep, but I kept going to bed earlier and earlier, and sneaking in a little day reading, to boot. Yes, there's romance...and psychology, and philosophy and God and science, but it's one hell of a ride, with tension and action, too. Did I say unpredictable. It is. That's why it's a page-turner. You just can't imagine what's going to happen to these crazy smart characters.
One of the main characters is a psychiatrist. Picture Dr. Frasier Crane as played by Kelsey Grammer. The man in this book is very much like I had pictured his starchy, yet not unkind personality. Sarah is a patient -- a very intelligent and enigmatic woman. It's a somewhat bittersweet story and one I'll remember for a very long time.
Great story and insights into the therapeutic community, those they work with, and society today. Captures the emotions on all sides of mental health in America today, and does it with an engaging story that is very enjoyable. I recommend it for anyone who just wants a fun summer read and for anyone who would like to know more about what's going on behind closed doors and inside the heads of those involved in recovery today.
