I have to admit that my now 14 year old so got me into reading dystopian novels. I have read the Hunger Games, The Divergent Series, and the Champions Series; all were great and I am sorry I delayed in reading the Razorland Series. To be quite honest I actually like this series better than all three of the previously mentioned ones.This book has everything you could want from this genre; love, hope, action, heartbreak, and above all else amazing characters. This book brought me to tears on several occasions, at 38 years old I have not read many books that I can say have actually cause me to do so. As with any good book and great author, Aguirre has characters who die in this book and some who I didn't expect to, which was sad but held true to the story. There were times reading this book that I had to make myself put it down so I could go to sleep, and waited with anticipation to read it some more after I got home from work. I gave it 5 stars for all the reasons I have stated so far, but also because this book has a sense of realism that makes it special. The relationships between Duece, Fade, and Stalker are done very well. f you enjoyed the Hunger Games and Divergent you will love this book, if you haven't read it stop waiting around and buy it. You won't be disappointed in this book.

SPOILER ALERT!!

First of all, I do want to say that even though this was a very good book, it wasn't as good as Enclave. Enclave moved ahead at a breakneck speed, offering adventure, excitement, horror, and yes, romance. Deuce and Fade fit together so well, it was almost hard to have Tegan and Stalker join them Topside. Don't misunderstand me. I love Tegan, but care not a whit for Stalker. I don't care if he does a 180 turn from the vile boy he was, I still find him creepy. Yes, In understand he grew up in a dangerous, loveless world, and had to do what he did in order to survive...blah..blah..blah! I just know that if Fade were in his place, he would have made some different decisions about raping helpless young girls, and keeping them against their will. Fade is moral down to his core, and even if Stalker grows to become a moral person, it still won't ring true for me. Frankly, I'm surprised that Ms. Aguirre, who I judge to be an excellent writer and storyteller, would try to make Stalker part of a love triangle. I love Fade for Deuce. He's good for her and helps her to find her humanity. He can match her on the battlefield as her equal, yet be the warm, caring boy she needs away from it. Fade helps Deuce to find her softer side, something that Stalker can never do. And what is it with him anyway? He keeps trying to kiss her even when she's repeatedly told him no. I guess when you've watched young girls screaming not to be raped and still let the boys in your gang do it, you really don't get the concept of NO! Ms. Aguirre doesn't say he didn't rape any of the girls himself, so the assumption is that he partook in that horrific behavior too.
As for the actual storyline, the first part of the book is incredibly slow. I almost forgot about the horrors lurking outside the walls of Salvation for a while. While it was interesting to delve more into their characters, and introduce a loving family into Deuce's life, it went on for a little too long. Deuce at times came across as smug in her judgment of the people of Topside, particularly the women. Yes, I understand that they were narrow-minded and judgmental themselves and treated Deuce cruelly with their teasing and gossip, but her opinion of them was hardly any better.
I also get frustrated with storylines where misunderstandings can be cleared up with just a straight heart-to-heart conversation. The silence between Deuce and Fade could have been cleared up within the first week. And what's with allowing Stalker into her bedroom whenever he wanted?
About Fade, is it necessary to make him the whipping boy in this installment? First he loses Deuce, which breaks his heart even though he steps aside so that she can be happy; second, he gets whipped to within an inch of his back by his foster father, because he's still in love with her and snaps back at the man, and also breaks the man's rules by following her and Stalker to the house where they spar. That was bad enough. Then he gets kidnapped by the Freaks and broken in body and spirit? Seriously?? If he doesn't end up with Deuce at the end of the series, or ends up dying for her, leaving a clear field for Stalker, I'll be heartbroken.
Ms. Aguirre's intention is to keep us guessing and wanting more, like any talented author. I would venture to say that she certainly achieved that goal with flying colors.
Holy everlovin' crap balls, people. Ann Aguirre doesn't just give you a good story that maybe you'll like, she reaches into your chest and pulls out little bits of you as she puts her characters in excruciatingly difficult situations. I... kinda want to grow up to be like her some day.

Where to begin? Let's see...

Deuce, Fade, Stalker, and Tegan have to adjust to a whole new way of life in Salvation. While Tegan fits in quickly, Deuce and Stalker find themselves just a little left of center, while Fade draws farther away from them. I really love Deuce's outlook on life. She's disarmingly honest -- whether it's about breeding or her own feelings -- and she understands what it takes to survive in a world where Freaks are on the loose.

Given her upbringing, I thought her slow puzzling through her feelings for Fade was perfect. She's not sure what to make of her foster mother because she's never had someone who cared about her without her giving something for it. She understands Stalker better than most because she knows what it's like to be in his shoes. He's doing what he knows because it's what he's been taught. Deuce has come to realize that the Elders made her no better than him by feeding her lies and twisting the truth until it was unrecognizable.

And then there's Fade. Everything about that boy makes me want to weep. Unlike Deuce, he knows what a loving family should look like. He's put in a crappy situation in Salvation and he suffers for it. He feels very emotionally fragile to me and I LOVE how Deuce tries to reach out to him. I love a lot of things about their relationship, to be honest. It's messy and danger is constantly surrounding them, but the crazy makes it somehow sweeter.

Bad things happen on a lot of levels here and I was wound up from the first page. I still am and it's been several days since I finished the book. That's some good story telling!

Amazing reading due to the never ending twists and turns while full of emotional highs and plenty of lows. Due to the main characters young ages it sometimes amazes me the choices and reasons they make these choices. Some are childish others as if their ages were much higher and unselfish. A wonderful mix of courage and also being young and afraid to ask why when they see disappointment in others they care about. I am sixty-eight years old and enjoyed the book totally. I gave the book to a fourteen year old girl who also loves the book. Great continuation from the first book in this series. I recommend this series to young and old, you will not be disappointed or bored since there is no filler to add to the page numbers.
